Description
Our bonds with our animal companions are as strong, and sometimes stronger, than the bonds we experience with other humans. However, we live in a society that does not often recognise the importance of these relationships, and therefore the impact of their loss. As a result, coming to terms with the loss of a beloved animal companion can be a lonely, difficult process with long-term impacts on mental health. There is also a lack of the usual ceremonies and rites that would bring a sense of honour and closure to the lives of our companions.
This course seeks to equip students to provide support to people and families, and their animals who are facing a terminal diagnosis, are in the active dying process, or who have already died. This course is a companion to those offered by Sacred Dying SA on death doulaship. It can also stand alone as a guide on supporting people with the illness, loss or death of their animal companions.
