In the final module which is the Certification Death Doula Course, the student will be introduced to palliative care, practical home care, physiological and spiritual aspects of dying, cultural considerations at the end of life, end-of-life ethics, what is meant by a good death, planning for the end, comfort and compassion at the end of life, Death Doula and patient boundaries, the doula bag and the suggested contents thereof and sitting vigil at the deathbed.

Once the student has successfully completed the assignment they will be rewarded with a certificate as a Certified Death Doula and have the opportunity to list their services with Sacred Dying South Africa – Embracing The End Of Life or work as an independent professional within their community.

In the Intermediate Course, the student will gain further insight into becoming a Death Doula. Information regarding the birth of a Death Doula, how Death Doulas will change how we are coping with end-of-life care, how to address the family members or patient that you are caring for, end of life diseases and emotional support, keeping the dying in mind, accepting death, attitudes towards dying, supportive therapies for the dying, support for children in the family and nursing the dying body, will further enhance the student’s understanding.

Once the assignments have been submitted and graded the student will then be able to register for the final course, which is the Certification Death Doula Course.

In the Introductory Course, the student will learn about the basic principles of becoming a Death Doula.

The content of the course also includes information such as what is a Death Doula and what do they do, information regarding the South African Medical Association (SAMA), how to create a sacred space for the dying, learn how to communicate about death, coping mechanisms when working with someone that is dying, how to cope with a terminal illness, how to provide comfort at the end of life, spiritual support and other practical tasks at the end of life, the dying process and signs when death is near.

The content of module one is concise and comprehensive, preparing the student for the Introductory Course. The student is required to complete this module and submit the assignment and multiple-choice exam, before moving on to the Intermediate Course.
